Frequent testing, and hopes to complete an internship and study abroad academics wee cause significant anxiety, a leading German psychiatrist told the magazine's website.
Rainer Holm-Hadulla said higher demands on students taking their toll in all areas of their lives - even romance.
Many find that they do not have the time, he said.
"After the depression and anxiety issues, the students came to me with a problem with their partner," she said, giving the example recently of a child who, the day before she moved with her boyfriend, fall in love with another girl.
He said the change of guided learning in school to the university's self-study for some exceptional students. Increased academic demands on time means there is less room for personal development and the pursuit of the interests of the students themselves.
Such pressure has an adverse impact on personal relationships, he said, while also being narrowed academic experience with the demands of college.
